Summary

Different types and intensities of exercise have varying effects on the immune system. While light to moderate exercise often improves the immune system, extensive high-level endurance exercise often increases the odds of getting sick. In particular, high intensity exercise can impair the immune system and can result in repetitive infection. These negative effects can be multiplied by external stresses, such as competition. Coaches can maintain athletes’ health by avoiding overtraining.

Implementation

  • Monitor athletes’ health during periods of intense exercise. Ease off the training if illness is becoming more frequent among the team.
  • Monitor non-training stresses the face your athletes, such as competition, exams, or personal issues. Such other stresses could be cause to reduce training intensity, in order to maintain a healthy immune system.
