Podcast: Chill Out

Mar 12th, 2010

A recent study shows that putting athletes in ice or in a cooling chamber before workouts improves performance. In the study, athletes chilled for two and a half minutes, then performed an endurance run at 90 percent effort. The chilled athletes performed better and showed higher oxygen capacity. Scientists think chilling slows the rise in body temperature that occurs during exercise and conserves body fluids through decreased sweating.
